That’s a tough question to answer in only a few words!

When the human body forms before a baby is born, what starts off as just one human cell starts to multiply and as this happens different cells take on different roles (e.g. bone cells, muscle cells, nerve cells, etc.). There are about 200 of these cell types!

These cells form tissues and organs. The body relies on each part to do it’s own part properly in order to work. Each part is dependent on nearly every other part. For example, the brain needs oxygen to work, it needs nerves to send a signal to the diaphragm muscle to move so that air enters the lungs, the lung cells need to let oxygen through to the blood, the red blood cells need to carry oxygen to the brain.

Everything works in cycles like this. When it goes wrong in a person, people like me have to work out which part went wrong and how to fix it!
