Every time the Earth passes through areas of space that contain a lot of meteoroids – small pieces of rock, dust or ice moving in the solar system. Meteor showers occur fairly frequently, but they are not always very spectacular – the most famous one is the Perseid meteor shower that happens every year in August, where you could spot up to 100 meteors every hour if you were far away from bright sources of light such as cities.

The meteor showers that are the most impressive in terms of number of meteors per hour that you could spot are the Geminids and the Quadrantids, which occur mid-December and early January, respectively. You can see as many as 120 meteors per hour during these!

You can find a list of meteor showers here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_meteor_showers – they seem to occur every few days, believe it or not! The column called ‘ZHR’ is the one that tells you how many meteors you can expect to see every hour if you were in a dark area!
