Pip Millington answered on 17 Nov 2016:

Stars are enormous balls of gas behaving like a massive nuclear reactor. Most stars contain a lot of hydrogen and helium, some older stars contain other elements like carbon and oxygen. Physicists now think most elements were once formed for the first time inside stars or when stars collided into other stars, even things like gold.
