I’ve been to visit the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. That’s probably the coolest experiment in the world both in the size and engineering involved and also in the temperature! It’s used to smash tiny particles together to look at what they’re made of, even though the particles are tiny they are moving so fast that the detectors are about the height of a 5 storey building. To get the LHC to work it has to be cooled down to -271 degrees Celsius (colder than outer space!), but the collisions between the particles is hotter than anything else on earth at a whooping 5.5 trillion degrees Celsius! That’s hotter than the sun! There are thousands of scientists all working on different detectors and experiments at the LHC so it’s also very impressive for team work. I’d definitely recommend visiting, if you go while they are doing an upgrade you can go down in the tunnels (it’s all buried underground!) to see everything!
