First, there was a lot of hot gas and dust in space. Due to gravity, this dust started clumping together, and the bigger it got, the more dust it could gather. One lump was very hot and dense, so it began generating its own energy – this was our Sun. The rest of the dust kept swirling around the sun, and some of it clumped together to form the planets which eventually settled into stable orbits around the sun.
