      Seven or eight big plates make up the crust of our planet, as well as several smaller plates. These plates are not fixed and can move – this is how earthquakes happen, new volcanoes form, and even new seas and oceans can form if two plates move far away from each other, creating a gap that fills with water. If, on the other hand, two plates move towards each other, them can form mountains as both plates start to pile up against each other.

      These processes are not that quick, which is why we don’t really see new lakes and mountains forming every day – if they did, a map would get outdated pretty quickly!
