We are the products of millions of years of evolution. How did the first thing that was alive, become alive, though? Scientists are still not sure about that one – although there are a few neat experiments that give us some clues about it.

Scientists put methane, ammonia, hydrogen and water vapour into a sealed container, because these chemicals made up the atmosphere of Earth when life is thought to have begun. They added sparks of electricity that acted as lightning would. After a week, they found a reddish-brown substance coating the walls of the container, and this substance contained half of the amino acids (the chemicals that make up proteins) used by living organisms.

But showing that complex molecules were able to form in the early days of Earth is not the same as showing that life has formed . A question that is still not fully answered is how amino acids formed the first organisms that were able to multiply and copy themselves – our Last Universal Common Ancestor (LUCA), an organism that all other life evolved from.

We know a lot about LUCA and how it functioned, but that crucial step that led from complex molecules to LUCA is still not fully answered – maybe you could be the one to do it!
