We don’t know of any animals that have evolved from rocks, as every living thing on Earth is carbon-based. There are, however, theories about different types of lifeforms that are not carbon-based that COULD exist on other planets – we just haven’t found any so far.

If you’re wondering about creatures that live ON rocks, lichen are a cool example – these are strange organisms that are neither plant, nor animal. Lichen are a combination of algae or bacteria and fungal filaments living together in a happy mutually beneficial relationship.

Finally, if you look closely enough, you’ll find creatures living in all kinds of crazy environments, because they have evolved means to thrive in circumstances that would kill many other creatures.
For example, some bacteria thrive in underwater hydrothermal vents that can reach temperatures up to 120 degrees Celsius. Organisms that love really hot environments are called hypertermophiles (which literally translates as very high temperature-loving). While some organisms can’t tolerate the high temperatures near these vents, they have successfully adapted to living deep on the ocean floor where pressure can be 380 times higher than the pressure we experience here on the surface of Earth.
