Volcanoes are mostly made up of igneous rock. On the surface where it’s cool (ish), these rocks are solid. Underground, the temperatures get a lot higher and the rocks are liquid/molten – this is known as magma. Once this molten rock reaches the surface it becomes known as lava. Chemically, magma contains silicon and oxygen (SiO2) plus carbon and other metals like iron and sodium.
