      As asteroids enter Earth’s atmosphere, they encounter friction (because there are a lot more atoms in the atmosphere than there are in space).

      Because they travel at such high speeds, they experience a lot of resistance in the atmosphere so they start heating up, which is what causes them to catch fire!
