The Moon is always the same shape – Even in the emoji in your question it always looks circular! However, sometimes not all of it is bright – this is because the moon does not have its own light – it only reflects the light of the Sun. As the Moon orbits Earth, Earth will start to end up getting caught between the moon and the sun – and the moon ends up in Earth’s shadow. When the Earth is completely between the moon and the sun, we get a new moon, and when the Earth doesn’t come between the two at all, we get the full moon!
