      Because the sun is so big, in the centre of the sun there are nuclear fusion reactions. This is when two light atoms can be squashed together to make a heavier one. This releases lots of energy which is often in the form of heat. It is from nuclear fusion in stars that we have so many heavy elements on earth (like metals).
